GMO situation at Pick n Pay South Africa (via Email)

29 Dec

I called Pick n Pay to find out if the pop corn they sold was GMO, this is the email response I received.

Good Day Roxanne

Thank you for shopping with Pick N Pay

Kindly note as per your request Please see our PnP Head office response below regarding your query to Genetically Modified Products

Pick n Pay strongly supports GM labelling as far as is practical, because this gives a degree of transparency for our customers and allows them freedom of choice. We are very aware that our customers want to know what is in their food, and we comply with all legislation related to the Consumer Protection Act, and have strict internal mechanisms in place regarding food safety. Pick n Pay has begun labelling our products, and are ready to start printing maize meal packaging with reference to GM products in the ingredient list. Due to confusion and the recent amendment  surrounding the legislation on Genetic Modification the labelling of foodstuffs has been delayed. Several meetings have been held between the government and retailers and suppliers in order to gain clarity on what exactly the labelling should convey to consumers. During the hiatus, caused by the uncertainty from the government’ s side on GM labelling, it is impossible for any retailer or supplier to claim that they are stocking GM-free food if it contains maize, canola, soya, or cotton. Currently all fresh produce in Pick n Pay is GM free as none of these contain maize, canola, soya, or cotton.  Due to the premature nature of the legislation, there is no list of products that contain genetically modified ingredients.
